Did you know that Indonesia produces 120.000 tons of waste in a day? Or can you imagine, the facts say that in Jakarta alone the total waste in two days equals the area of Borobudur Temple?
After conducting research we found that from the total waste which is produced in Indonesia, only about 42% is being collected and processed. Realizing this fact, it is known that the role of society particularly youth are very prominent to be the agents of change who are able to address the waste management program. At least we believe that youth can re-use and recycle the waste. In line with this idea, on February 21st 2016 Indonesia celebrates the National Waste Care Day in support to the declaration of Indonesia Free of Waste 2020.
Harnessing this celebration, Do Something Indonesia (YCAB Foundation) as a digital based social movement of youth, in collaboration with CitiPeKa (Peduli dan BerKarya) and Citi Foundation, initiated a campaign program to challenge youth to make something valuable and beneficial by recycling the waste, to be given as a gift to loved ones. We are conducting a Campaign Day Out and Recycling Workshop in seven (7) cities which are, Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, Yogyakarta, Samarinda, Semarang, and Palembang. This program is also coordinated by Do Something Special Agents in these cities and Bank Sampah (Waste Bank) as well as community based environmentalists who are our local partners.
Back on Thursday, February 18th 2016, we conducted a kick-off event consisting of a Press Conference and Recycling Workshop in Rumah Belajar (YCAB House of Learning) Manggarai and assisted by Do Something Indonesia and Citi-Peka volunteers. There were a total of 32 students divided into 10 groups that have successfully worked and made more than ten (10) recycled goods, including a fruit basket and stationary case.

To further support this program, Do Something Indonesia also provides an online platform to be utilized to challenge youth, conducting the campaign through its website and Instagram. The youths are invited to submit a picture of their recycled item that was given to their loved one, by putting hashtag #NyampahItuKuno #Citi #Indonesia #Citivolunteers and tagging Do Something Indonesia on Instagram (dosomething_id).
The whole program of #NyampahItuKuno will be conducted from February to April, where the closing event will be held on April 22nd in celebration of Earth Day. At this event, Do Something Indonesia will invite the students from Rumah Belajar Manggarai as well as Do Something Indonesia volunteers based in Jakarta to present the recycled goods at a mini expo. At the same time, the best online campaign will be assessed and given a total prize of six (6) million rupiah.
