SEA Volunteering: Driving Social Impact Through Environmental Action

Posted on August 5, 2025

YCAB Foundation, in collaboration with Central Finansial X (CFX), conducted a mangrove planting activity involving the planting of 300 mangrove seeds to celebrate the CFX’s second anniversary. The event, titled Social, Environmental, Awareness (SEA) Volunteering, took place at Tanjung Pasir Beach as a form of the company commitment and responsibility towards environmental conservation, contributing positively to the local community’s economic sustainability.

As an Indonesian social enterprise committed to empowering youth and marginalized communities through education and economic support, YCAB Foundation integrates environmental stewardship as part of its holistic development approach. This initiative aligns with YCAB’s long-term mission to create sustainable and inclusive change by fostering resilience among communities in vulnerable ecosystems.

Tanjung Pasir is one of the areas where YCAB Foundation provides ongoing support and community development programs. The beach is well known as one of the local tourist destinations and economic hubs in the northern region of Jakarta. It is also home to mangrove habitats, which serve not only as a tourism site but also as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and tidal flooding. However, due to increasing development and the expansion of fish and shrimp farms, mangrove areas have gradually been displaced. This activity represents a collaborative effort with the local community to protect the coastal ecosystem. This contribution also supports the restoration of the coastal environment at Tanjung Pasir Beach.

The event commenced with a symbolic handover of mangrove seedlings from CFX, represented by Subani as the Director of CFX to YCAB Foundation’s Chief of Party, Samantha Susilo, and Supri as the representative of the residents of Tanjung Pasir.

“Mangrove planting plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions, as mangroves have an exceptional ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As mangrove ecosystems grow, various economic activities can also be developed, enabling local communities to benefit from the natural resources provided by these ecosystems. This creates business opportunities and improves community welfare.” said Subani on Monday (July 28, 2025).

He added that through this mangrove planting initiative, it is hoped that, in the long term, the local community will become the main actors in preserving and sustaining the economic potential of the mangroves.

The core activity of this event involved volunteers, local figures, and residents jointly planting mangrove seedlings. Volunteers also had the opportunity to raise awareness among stakeholders about the importance of mangroves and their future potential, particularly in preserving coastal ecosystems.

As part of its broader mission to build self-reliant communities, YCAB Foundation sees initiatives like SEA Volunteering not just as environmental actions, but as an entry point to deeper social impact. This activity not only strengthens the relationship among stakeholders but also demonstrates how we can take meaningful actions for the environment we live in, whether by protecting nature or creating sustainable impact for the marginalized communities living in the coastal area of Tanjung Pasir.

Through this collaboration, YCAB Foundation reaffirms its role as a bridge between communities and changemakers, driving long-term impact that not only heals the environment but also uplifts lives. The success of this mangrove planting initiative is more than a symbolic gesture, it marks an important step in a larger journey toward a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for Tanjung Pasir and other marginalized communities within YCAB Foundation’s broader mission across Indonesia.
