Youth from 10 Cities Launch Campaign #KitaIndonesia to Fight against Discrimination

Posted on April 19, 2017

Aligned with the International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21st 2017, Do Something Indonesia (DSI) launched a movement called #KitaIndonesia (#WeAreIndonesia) the new campaign to invite youth from all over Indonesia to fight against racial discrimination.

This movement #KitaIndonesia is being held in 10 cities namely Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, Denpasar, Makassar, Balikpapan, and Batam. Youth, communities, and local NGOs collaborate to improve respect without comparison, and think about racial, religion, and ethnicity. Do Something believes that diversity makes us Indonesian.

This movement is divided into 2 (two) activities:

1. Online Campaign: We invite youth to do a group hug challenge with their friends from different backgrounds, racial, religion, and ethnicity. After doing the challenge, they can upload their photos to DSI’s website (dosomethingindonesia.org) and social media (Facebook & Instagram) with the hashtag #KitaIndonesia. This campaign has been running since March 1st, 2017.

2. Campaign Day Out: An offline program collaborates with volunteers and youth from 10 different cities. Campaign Day Out adapting the march concept was held on March 19th, 2017. In Jakarta, this activity used a parade concept that invited many youths from different social and culture based communities.

“Through #KitaIndonesia movement, we want Indonesian youth to become change agent, especially to promote peace in diversity. We hope this movement is not only followed by youth in 10 cities, but also other areas in Indonesia by using the digital platform Do Something Indonesia,” said Firza Imam Putra, Chief Operating Officer YCAB Foundation.

“This event adapts a culture parade to show the pride of our youth as good citizens of The Republic of Indonesia. We believe that we can fight against racial discrimination by ensuring that our diverse communities can build a good relationship so there is no more prejudice,” closed Rezha Bayu Oktavian, Program Specialist Do Something Indonesia.

Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation) oversees Do Something Indonesia, which is a worldwide social movement that targets young people to respond to social problems through a digital platform that can be done anytime and anywhere. Do Something was established in New York, and joined with NGOs in campaigning internationally. The first Do Something in Asia was established in Indonesia.

We've found many of them useful and powerful to collect insights from various stakeholders of our organization."
