After Jakarta, Malang was the second city that conducted a campaign of #NyampahItuKuno in collaboration with Citi-Peka & Citi Foundation. Back on Saturday, March 5th 2016, Do Something Indonesia invited 35 youth from various universities and local communities in Malang to join the recycling workshop. Together celebrating the National Waste Care Day, Do Something Indonesia was really glad to have Bank Banner Malang (Simulakrum Handmade) as its local partner in conducting the recycling workshop and campaign.
The workshop and campaign was opened by an introduction delivered by Rezha Bayu Oktavian, Community Development Staff of Do Something Indonesia and Nabila, the founder of Bank Banner Malang (Simulakrum Handmade). Both representatives emphasized the main reason why this campaign is urgent and worth running in order to preserve the environment by implementing the waste management system. The facts say that Malang alone produces around 650 tons of waste a day. This high number of waste production in Malang is definitely in need of urgent response. Beside government regulations, community approaches are also needed to reduce the waste production and generate a healthy lifestyle by reusing and recycling the waste around us.
At the workshop session, various recycled items were successfully made by participants, using the unused banners and patchworks. There were pouches, hand phone sleeves, and a tote bag. Some participants also showed their creativity by making beautiful patterns on the recycled items, including Do Something Indonesia’s logo. After the workshop, participants were encouraged to submit their campaign on Do Somethings digital platforms which are website and Instagram. Some of them present the recycled items for their loved ones, along with the pictures they also told a story, showing their caring to their parents and friends as well as awareness towards the environment.
The whole program of the Campaign Day Out in Malang was coordinated and assisted by two amazing Special Agents of Do Something Indonesia, Pandu and Lili. Both have shown their commitment to be a part of Do Something Indonesia and social change.
