Posted on March 7, 2017

Pekalongan, 23th -25th February 2017 – This year YCAB held its Global Board Meeting, an annual event that was attended by YCAB’s Advisory Board and YCAB Executive Members. This annual meeting discussed YCAB’s achievements in 2016, and its organizational plan and goals for 2017. This year’s Global Board Meeting was held in Pekalongan City, Central Java.

During a series of meetings, the participants and accompanying journalists got the chance to visit Rumah Belajar Batik TBiG (Batik Learning Center) which is located at Wiradesa, Pekalongan. All participants received auditory and visual explanations about Rumah Batik from Agung, one of the alumni.

“Besides trained youth learning about Batik, we also teach students entrepreneurship skills. We hope after they graduate they can start their own businesses,” explained Agung to all of the participants.

After his presentation, the participants had a chance to learn about the Batik making processes. They were divided into 7 groups. Each participant could freely choose what type of Batik making process they wanted to be involved in. Some of the processes were making patterns, colouring, quality control, business management, and e-commerce, during a 30-minute session.

The presence of the Batik Learning Center in Pekalongan also has support from Pekalongan Regent. Pekalongan Regent Asip Kholbihi said that the benefit from the Batik Learning Center was not only for youth beneficiaries, but also for the local government. He mentioned that local government should take a significant part in preparing Batik artisan resources. He hoped that with the collaboration between local government, private sector, and YCAB; Rumah Batik can produce many excellent Batik artisans and preserve a tradition.

If YCABers have a chance to go to Pekalongan, don’t forget to visit our Rumah Batik!
