Portraits of Women Entrepreneurs “ANGEL OF CHANGE: ON THE FLIPSIDE”

Posted on June 1, 2014

Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation) along with Indonesia Leica Community (id.L) launched a photo essay book called the “Angel of Change: On the Flipside” at Kinokuniya Bookstore, Plaza Senayan.

This book tells the story and the struggle of Indonesian women as agents of change in their families. The photographs taken by id.L portray the dedication and dignity of Indonesian women who are the backbone of the family struggling for the welfare of their children.

During the launch, there was a book review by Oscar Motuloh who curated the beautiful photographs. Also present were Andy F. Noya, the steering committee, as well as Jerry Justianto, a representative from Leica.

The event also commemorates International Children's Day which falls on June 1st, where children as successors of the next generation are equipped by education as the foundation of their lives.

Founder / CEO of YCAB Foundation Veronica Colondam says: “For some of us, dreams are part of our everyday lives, but not so for underprivileged children. Having a dream is a luxury for these children; luxury that cannot be bought with money. Money is only available with economic stability. Without economic stability, the children are not going to be able to finish school.”
Microfinance by YCAB is an extension of the YCAB third pillar, namely HOPE (Hands-on Operation of Entrepreneurship) which aims to help the disadvantaged families through the micro-credit program offered to disadvantaged mothers who run small businesses. Moreover, the program requires that the children stay in school.

"We hope that through this photo essay, we can sense the economic pulse and the breath of dozens of women survivors. Not only it stirs our feelings, but it can inspire all of us. Inspiration can lead us to make sense of life in our respective places,” says Veronica.

Each purchase of the book “Angel of Change: On The Flipside” is donated to the YCAB Foundation. “Coming from our admiration for YCAB’s good work, we wanted to create a photo essay project to show the optimistic side of underprivileged communities. We tried to document these pictures not only through our eyes, but also through our hearts. In these communities, we feel that there is a genuine passion, and dignity from these remarkable women. At the end of the project, we felt that we had been giving too little compared to what we got from them. We hope the photo essay will be able to say what we feel when we meet our sisters face to face,” says Jerry Justianto, an id.L representative.
