Semarang, 16 October 2019 – Since 2015, HSBC Indonesia has collaborated with the YCAB Foundation (Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa) to hold a five-year educational project called Anak Bangsa Ready to Work (ABSB). The program aims to equip youth from underprivileged families who attend vocational schools (SMK) with job readiness skills and entrepreneurial knowledge. There are two types of sub-programs in ABSB, namely Ready to Work which provides workforce readiness training, such as writing CV, job interviews techniques and presentations. While Ready to Business provides entrepreneurship training in which participants learn financial management and are given venture capital to practice implementing business ideas. Within a period of five years ABSB has been implemented in various major cities in Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Medan, Bandung, Surabaya and Semarang.
The ABSB program in Semarang this year was carried out from August 2018 to October 2019 and has reached 1189 young people from 10 SMK. “The collaboration between YCAB and HSBC Indonesia for ABSB in Semarang has reached 119% of the target of 1000 participants. We are very proud with the result because ABSB is very much in line with YCAB’s mission to cut the poverty cycle through economic and education empowerment programs. Independence is proof of the success of an empowerment program, “said Veronica Colondam, founder and CEO of YCAB.
After going through the evaluation phase, 24 finalist participants were selected from the Ready to Work Program and 22 groups consisting of 45 people from the Ready to Business Program in the ABSB Semarang event. At the closing ceremony on October 16, 2019 at Wisma Purba Danata Foundation, Semarang, the finalists of the Ready to Work Program presented their work plans and dream work. While the finalists of the Ready to Business Program presented their business plans.
The participants expressed their high creativity during the presentation session. Such as the group from SMK Teuku Umar with Cokiren as their product branding. Dela, Anggi, Giovani and Seftiana Putri Nur Wijaya from SMK Teuku Umar obtained their business idea due to their concern for durian seed waste. Generally durian seeds only become waste, even though they contain various benefits, such as improving bone and dental health condition from the high phosphorus and calcium level content. The group processed durian seeds into chocolate stuffing to make it similar to walnut flavor. Sefti and her friends has been running the business for almost 8 months. They admitted that participating in the ABSB program has impoved their entrepreneurial skills. “The ABSB program is very important for vocational students who want to open a business with their friends and gain more entrepreneurial ideas. This is a great opportunity to be creative and achieve your dreams,” said Sefti who is still 16 years old.
HSBC Indonesia and YCAB are committed to continue the ABSB program until 2020 to reach 5000 young people as a way to improve human resources quality that will advance Indonesia. Until October 2019 the ABSB program has successfully reached 4273 young people in Indonesia.
