“Jakarta Stop AIDS” Educates 120,000 Students in Jakarta A YCAB Foundation and Unilever Indonesia Collaboration
Jakarta, 4 December 2011 – In commemoration of World AIDS Day, Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation) and Unilever Indonesia Foundation held a healthy walk event at FX Plaza, Senayan Jakarta. The event, which was attended by 1,200 students, 200 teachers, and 200 employees of PT. Unilever Indonesia and YCAB Foundation, was part of the Jakarta Stop AIDS (JSA) initiative that has been held since 2009.
JSA is aimed at raising public awareness about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and drugs abuse, targeting junior high and senior high school students and teachers in Jakarta through peer-to-peer communication. The initiative also mobilizes a group of JSA Ambassadors assigned with the task of disseminating information about HIV/AIDS to their peers.
Aside from YCAB Foundation and Unilever, a number of other partners were also involved in the program implementation, including the AIDS Commission of DKI Jakarta and the Education Office of DKI Jakarta.
“World AIDS Day commemoration today presents an important moment for all of us to develop public awareness and understanding about HIV/AIDS. This event is part of our Public Health Education initiative to educate our youth to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is also the implementation of the company’s long term plan to improve the quality of public health”, said Corporate Secretary PT. Unilever Indonesia Antarikso Sancoyo.
Meanwhile, Secretary General YCAB Foundation dr. Irwan Iskandar Hukom cited the data from the AIDS Monitoring Commission of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, stating that until June 2011, DKI Jakarta saw the highest number of cumulative HIV/AIDS cases in Indonesia, amounting to 3,997 cases; Jakarta is followed by other provinces such as Papua (3,938); West Java (3,809); East Java (3,775); and Bali (1,747).
“In addressing the current progress, we are working together with Unilever Indonesia Foundation on the JSA program to promote greater public awareness and understanding about HIV/AIDS. Currently, the JSA program has 635 ambassadors who actively disseminate information about HIV/AIDS to approximately 120,000 students in Jakarta”, he concluded.
