YCAB Foundation and Dorkas Foundation Build Learning Center to Help Underprivileged People

Jakarta, 24 January 2012 – Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation) and Dorkas Foundation have inaugurated a House of Learning (Rumah Belajar) on Saturday (01/20) for the underprivileged in North Jakarta. Rumah Belajar will provide several affordable courses, i.e. computer course, English course, as well as Mandarin for the youth in North Jakarta area, to enhance their skills in welcoming the globalization era.

Currently, Jakarta sees a high number of underprivileged. Central Body of Statistics data as of September 2011 illustrated that there were 355,000 low-income communities in Jakarta (3.64%). Meanwhile, North Jakarta is home to the city’s largest population of poor community, standing at 54,000.

Therefore, YCAB Foundation and Dorkas Foundation realized the urgency of building Rumah Belajar, located on the 3rd floor of WTC Mangga Dua to provide qualified and affordable courses for underprivileged youth in North Jakarta. The courses are computer courses, English courses, and Mandarin courses, as the three most essential skills for survival in the globalization era.

“The collaboration between YCAB Foundation and Dorkas Foundation was aimed at a wider reach of underprivileged youth in North Jakarta area −as our target is youth − who make up a major percentage of DKI Jakarta population”, said Secretary General YCAB Foundation dr. Iskandar Irwan Hukom. He added that youth, as the population’s most productive element is the main target of YCAB Foundation. He stated that youth makes up 72.73% of DKI Jakarta’s total population.

Rumah Belajar and a library facility are open from Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Each course aims to educate 480 students per year with the assitance of certified teachers. The program’s operating budget will be fully endorsed by Dorkas Foundation.

Meanwhile, Head of Dorkas Foundation Yuki Chandra stated that both YCAB Foundation and Dorkas Foundation would open other Rumah Belajar units in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. “Dorkas Foundation would like to pave a wider path for this program through this partnership, and we are very happy to work alongside YCAB Foundation with its expertise in establishing Rumah Belajar”, he concluded.
